Kopp convicted of killing abortion doctor
James Kopp has been convicted of second degree murder in the killing of Dr. Barnett Slepian in October of 1988. Slepian was an abortionist in Buffalo, NY.
Bruce Barket, Kopp's attorney had argued that Kopp only intended to wound Slepian, but apparently the court did not accept this argument. The trial was very short, only a day. Kopp had elected to concede to all the evidence against him and have the judge, not a jury, determine the verdict. The judge, Michael D'Amico, had studied the information ahead of time and then listened to evidence on Monday, March 17. On Tuesday there was a very short session for the verdict to be announced. He could receive up to 25 years in prison.
According to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, pro-life spokespeople were quoted as saying, "I believe justice was served," "Killing abortionists is using violence to solve a problem. Violence is not the answer to violence," and "James Kopp became like the abortionists he abhorred." There were no pro-life comments supporting Kopps action.
The spokesperson Rochester Area Right to Life said, "James Kopp received justice, which is more than he allotted to his victim. Violence has no place in the pro-life movement."
