Where are the feminists to speak up for Terri?
It is interesting that in the case of Terri Schiavo the feminists have been notably silent. For the most part, they have chosen not to comment even vaguely as to the even potential oppression of Terri by her husband or the judges, or, indeed, by anyone.
A search on the NOW website turned up precisely one
reference to Terri Schiavo, in a recent biweekly column by the president. The
concerns of NOWs president were that the media had failed to pick up on three
important points:
(1) If Terris partner were of the same sex, then that partner might not have
any voice in the medical decisions at all. We should combat that by working for
equal marriage rights for homosexuals.
(2) President Bush is at fault for working on tort reform, which would cap
malpractice suits like Michael Schiavos at $250,000.
(3) The pressure put on women by society to be beautiful is what put Terri into
this situation.

The Feminist Majority also had one reference to Terri
Schiavo. It was in their article on the founding of a new order of priests
whose task would be exclusively the promotion of respect for life. The article
said Fr. Pavone was an outspoken figure in the Terri Schiavo controversy.

Silence is not characteristic of the traditional feminist organizations in the US. But it is consistent when it comes to Terri.

And for an interesting comparison see what Kathryn Jean Lopez has to say about how the feminists have treated both Laci Peterson and Terri Schiavo. http://www.beliefnet.com/story/163/story_16338.html
